I have a little fantasy…

Hold on, before we start I want to make sure that we all agree that any “oo-er missus” thoughts that popped into your head as you read the title of this piece was entirely of your own making… we clear on that? Good, then let us move on…

I spend a lot of my time alone… No, don’t go awwww, that just makes me sound sad…. Since I’ve been back in the land of wage-earner, I’ve not spent as much time alone as I did last year but, as I work part time, and Lone Support Angel works full time (with LOADS of OT) I still have a lot of time without any voices in the flat except my own (or whichever dj happens to be talking over the music) and that does mean I tend to vocalize my thoughts (particularly during essay writing sessions)…

So here’s where my fantasy comes in… Now don’t start that again!!!

Scene: I am standing in front of a big crowd of people. I am terrified. I am angry. I have been having a discussion with a few people at a community event and now find myself being pushed forward, towards a microphone…

Across the way I can see booths set up for various political parties (it’s election year and most of the party’s are trying to drum up support)… I see the crowd before me, as it’s a hot summers day tee-shirts and shorts appear to be the sartorial combo of choice for the majority, not so the political reps, suited and booted seems to be their summer fashion… Though, to be fair, they have draped their jackets over chairs and the ties are all at half mast… But you can see they are not really fitting in, and people are avoiding them…

So here I am, about to speak. About to try to convey an idea in a language I have known all my life… Something that has been running around in my head for ages… The very thing I have been discussing with my friends not twenty minutes ago….

Now remember, this is a fantasy… I’m not going to do this for real!!

Aaaaaannnnd ACTION!

“Hi Folks! I mean, Hello Ladies and Gentlemen. Can I have a moment of your time? I just want to talk about us. All of us.

“We have heard a lot today about “Getting Britain Working” and “Reducing the Deficit”. Lot’s of promises of jam tomorrow… but no real guarantees… lot’s of rhetoric but no plans… Lot’s of media-speak but no truths.

“Well here are some truths. While this country is being run by a few hundred millionaires, billionaires and others with a vested interest in maintaining the status quo people are starving. While the media, the various political parties and the chattering classes bleat on about workshy scroungers and bloody immigrants, people are freezing to death. While the bankers, brokers and oligarchs drink champagne and celebrate yet another huge bonus, people are sleeping in skips. While some people buy up entire housing estates others are being thrown out of their homes because they have a “spare room”. This is wrong. This has got to STOP!”

I pause for breath. I can see that some people are walking away. I can see the party reps are sneering. I can practically here their thoughts: Oh look, another idiot trying to rally the masses. hahahaha. Fucking idiot hippy. But most people have stayed. Most regard me with a mixture of benign indulgence and guarded cynicism, in others there is just a glimmer of hope… It is the hope that gives me the courage to continue.

“Look at our politicians. Whether their flag is Blue, Red, Purple or Yellow, they regard you with contempt. They line their pockets with your hard earned money and tell you that you’re poor because you are lazy. They make deals with multinational corporations while denying you a voice. They make us pay for their second homes while we can’t afford our first. They are laughing at us!”

Mutterings are beginning now, within the crowd. Police are starting to appear. The Politicos are starting to put their jackets on. The adrenalin is kicking in now… I’m on a roll, I… <CUT!>

Sorry, I’ve had to break in here… You see this is where my fantasy tends to fracture… In some of the scenarios I start talking about how if more of us voted for independent candidates we would actually force our parliamentary system to change because the Commons would no longer be filled with the “Party Members”… In others I argue that by increasing the tax on the rich and corporations, closing tax loopholes, regulating the banks and by making our politicians work for us instead of against us we would actually be able reverse all of the eugenically inspired policies implemented by various governments over the past 30 years… In others the speech covers the renationalisation of Trains, Power, Water and Hardline Communications in order to lower prices (if all payments are going directly into the nations coffers the money could be spent on improving the systems we have rather than into the pockets of bosses and share-holders)…

In my fantasy (which in all honestly, has now become more nightmarish) I speak passionately, eloquently, empoweringly [Is that even a word?], almost hoarse… By the end of it the crowd are chanting “us, us, us, us…” You see, I’ve not been arguing about what “you can do” I’ve been arguing about what “WE can do”… Us. Not some suited nerk that claims to speak for you, not some sheltered, chinless pillock that studied politics changing things on our behalf, US! We fight, we organise, we challenge the system, we throw off the shackles of thirty odd years of neo-liberal thinking, WE know what the problems are in our country… We know that it’s NOT people fleeing persecution or searching for a better life, we know it’s NOT “gangs of feral youth”, we know it’s NOT single mothers, we KNOW it’s NOT lazy, workshy hiding on “the sick”… We KNOW that the problems in this country are NOT the fault of those struggling week in, week out to put roofs over heads, food on table and clothes on backs…

By know the crowd has begun to march… The police are being ordered to stop us but have in fact joined us… The politicos have disappeared… The people are on the move…

{I did say this was a fantasy didn’t I?}

The crowd grows… as we move toward the city we are joined by thousands more… hundreds of thousands… MILLIONS. We are taking back our parliament and our country…

It’s not an original fantasy, I’m sure plenty of other people have had pretty much the same idea… In fact I know that people have… There are people out there trying to help us see the truth about the corporate-political alliance who are in the process of returning this country to the mythical “golden age” of Victorian industriousness and philanthropy… we don’t need that. We don’t want it! We want a country where your worth isn’t based on your income, we don’t want a country run by privately educated tax dodgers for the sole benefit of their old school chums… We want a country that holds EVERYBODY in EQUAL regard…

I don’t have all the answers… I have some ideas… I have some strong feelings about the way things should be done (and NOT done)… I do know that if we want to change the system we have to work together… we have to ignore those that try to divide us…

We know that it is not the fault of the low-paid that they are low paid, it’s the fault of the employers (in collusion with the governments)

We know it’s not the fault of our doctors and nurses that our NHS is being suffocated and carved up, we know it’s the fault of multinational drug companies and insurance companies asset stripping our health services (in collusion with the governments)

We know that it’s not the fault of our teachers and parents that our schools are being privatised and vilified, it’s the fault of the city investors asset stripping our children’s future (in collusion with the governments)

We know that we are being lied to about the problems in our society, we know that the majority of people in this country are struggling week in week out, we know that each person feels that they are the only one going through it…

We can fix it! We can work together, we can challenge the bigots, the politicians, the corporations, the tax-dodgers, the City…

There are people who have already started the fight back… fire-fighters, medical professionals, public sector workers, educators, union members, we need to join them, we need to support them, we need to stand together!

I’m not arguing for a socialist utopia, I’m not arguing for communism, I’m arguing for a better society. A fairer society. A society where EVERYBODY has access to legal recourse (not just those that can afford to pay), a society where the tenant has more rights that the landlord, a society where education is free and available to everyone, a society where health is holistic and accessible to all, free at the point of entry.

We can do this. We can reclaim our future. Go out there and fight. Don’t look to your political “leaders” to fight on your behalf. Don’t blame immigrants or “scroungers”, don’t believe the lies!!!

Our political elite and their corporate paymasters are not trying to return us to the “Victorian Golden Age” of monied philanthropists helping the “deserving poor” through the goodness of their hearts… they are returning us to the days of the the Roman Republic… days when the super-wealthy could do as they pleased, treating the majority as little more than animals as long as they keep us happy with “bread and circuses”.

Most of us are now, effectively, slaves… Low pay, high rent or mortgages, job insecurity, restricted freedoms in the name of “security”, over-priced food, utility bills only the highest paid can afford, rising travel costs effectively restricting movement, anti-union laws, demonisation of entire sections of society, women being treated as second class citizens across the planet, religious institutions and leaders abusing peoples faith to further their own agendas, the list of people trying to abuse us, dehumanize us, blame us, separate us, control us is long, and varied but are predominantly wealthy males of European extraction…

This has rather got away from me… I didn’t set out to make this a diatribe… Actually I don’t know what this was meant to be about… I do know that I, like millions more around the planet, am angry, frustrated and fearful… but I do honestly believe that if we stopped pulling apart and worked together we can change the future…

We need to do this, we need to change the system, we need to stop believing that we can survive on the scraps that occasionally drop from the tables of the rich, we need to take back our society from those that have destroyed it…

Right, that’s it… All I am doing now is repeating myself… We know what we need to do to change our future… so do me a favour, stop reading this and go out and do it…

Or is that the real fantasy?
